Interview with an Artist: Sara Wolff

Interview with an Artist is a series where we, Galerie House, spotlight artists in our world. Our goal is to celebrate their work, and inspire our community to never stop chasing their creative spirits.

Sara Wolff is a Liverpool based musician/songwriter/producer, originally from Norway, with a keen ear and whimsical understanding of how to breathe stories into melodies.

Galerie House : Explain what you do in 100 words or less.

Sara : I am a songwriter, musician and producer from Bergen, Norway, now based in Liverpool. I write songs for my solo project under my own name. I like to write stories about anything really - odd people, strange social interactions, an intense feeling, a nice word.

I also like to crochet, to look at dogs in the park and little wonky organ sounds. I love wool-y jumpers and I probably own about twenty of them.

Galerie House: How has your professional path evolved overtime?

Sara: When you’re in a creative industry, I think it’s difficult to ever look at what you make as “work". It starts out as a hobby, something you enjoy doing - in my case, I have always loved telling stories and writing songs. It was when I moved to Liverpool, found my band, and started releasing music that I started looking at it as a more ‘professional path’ - being an independent artist I have been my own manager, booking agent, you name it. So I guess it has evolved to something I’m more serious about now, even though I think I’d prefer to just sit and write all day!

Right now I’m in the middle of releasing a series of singles which will eventually form my debut EP. My friend Adam Rothschild co-produced, engineered and mixed the whole thing - and it’s my proudest accomplishment so far! I’m really proud of us.

We recorded it a wonderful residential recording studio just outside Manchester - Eve Studios. We stayed over for five days, fully submerged in the work, trying to pour out as many ideas as we could. Up until then I had always recorded on one single at a time, but working on a body of work is completely different - you get more time to say everything you want to say, show everything you are.

Through this year-long recording process, I feel like I’ve really figured out who I am musically. I am bursting to show it all!

My latest single is called ‘You Like Talking About Yourself’

Galerie House: Describe your aesthetic.

Sara: Knitted jumpers, nice patterns, soft textures, bric-a-brac, a bit scruffy at times. Some people call it "cottagecore". It’s outdated but in a good way.

Galerie House : If you could tell your younger self something, what would it be?

Sara: Go out and dance more, covid's coming!

Galerie House : What are you excited to do in the next 5 years?

Sara: I just told my friends the other day that I want to own a goat within the next five years -  that is probably my most important long term goal right now, haha! I’m also so excited to hug my friends again, maybe go on a nice holiday, write more songs, play some cool gigs, drink some pints, maybe even go on my first tour!! I am also so excited to find new musicians I love, new people to work with, and new brains to pick.
